U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate the number of older adults nationwide keeps increasing as younger age groups decrease. From 2020 through 2024, Americans age 65 or older grew by 13%, while the number of people under 18 decreased by 1.7%. Over the past 100 years, the country’s older adult population expanded from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million in 2024.

A 2021 analysis reports that nearly 50% of adults in this age group—or approximately 28 million Americans—will require long-term services and supports. The report also estimates that over a third of these older adults may ultimately utilize nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
