U.S. Congressman Aaron Bean announced on May 18 that the House of Representatives approved H.R. 8469, the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act for 2027.
The bill aims to support veterans and military families by providing full funding for healthcare programs, benefits, mental health services, suicide prevention initiatives, and homelessness programs. It also includes investments in military infrastructure to improve readiness and quality of life for service members.
Bean said, “We have a duty to support and care for those who have shown courage of conviction through their selfless service to our nation. This legislation fully funds veterans’ healthcare and benefits, and makes significant investments in mental health, suicide prevention, and homelessness programs. It also provides critical investments in military infrastructure that supports military readiness and improves the quality of life for our service members and their families.”
As part of the bill’s passage by a vote of 400 to 15, Bean introduced two amendments: Amendment #104 expands data analytics tools within Veterans Affairs (VA) programs to detect improper payments or fraud; Amendment #105 requires a comprehensive audit by the VA Office of Inspector General into improper payments or redundant contracts across VA offices with recommendations aimed at reducing waste.
The legislation also prohibits the VA from purchasing resources directly or indirectly from Communist China. Other provisions maintain prohibitions on closing Naval Station Guantanamo Bay or using construction funds for detainee facilities on U.S. soil.
