U.S. Congressman Aaron Bean from Florida’s 4th District has announced his support for the newly passed bill, H.R. 22, also known as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act. This legislation, which was passed by the House of Representatives, seeks to ensure that only American citizens can vote in federal elections by mandating proof of citizenship for voter registration.
In a statement, Congressman Bean emphasized the importance of maintaining integrity in the voting process: “One citizen, one vote—it’s the pillar of our democracy. Voting is both a sacred right and responsibility of American citizenship, and Americans demand election integrity. Today, House Republicans delivered on our commitment to protect the ballot box, and we passed the SAVE Act to ensure that only American citizens vote in our elections.”
The key provisions of the bill include a requirement for states to verify proof of citizenship in person before an individual can register to vote. It also instructs states to create a registration process for applicants who lack documentary proof or have inconsistencies due to name changes but are confirmed U.S. citizens. Additionally, the legislation mandates the removal of non-citizens from current voter lists while providing states with tools to facilitate this process.
The passage of the SAVE Act took place during the 118th Congress, with a bipartisan vote of 221 to 198. However, it was subsequently blocked by Senate Democrats.
