The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office announced on April 23 the unexpected passing of K9 Hugo, who died from a medical emergency on April 13.
K9 Hugo had joined the agency in September and was undergoing training to serve alongside deputies. The loss is significant for the department as he was preparing to take on responsibilities in both criminal apprehension and illegal narcotics detection.
Hugo, a four-year-old German Shepherd originally from Ohio and sourced through Sentinel Canine Solutions, was described as having shown great promise in his dual-purpose role. The agency said that these roles require dedication, intelligence, and courage—qualities Hugo demonstrated daily.
Sheriff Bill Leeper said: “K9 Hugo’s time with us was far too short, but the impact he made on his handler and our agency will never be forgotten. He represented the very best of what our K9 unit stands for – loyalty, courage, and an unwavering commitment to serve. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who had the privilege of working with him.”
The sheriff’s office stated that K9 Hugo will be missed by his handler Deputy Clements, colleagues at the agency, and all who knew him.
