CITY OF JACKSONVILLE BEACH: Good News for the Jacksonville Beach Sea Turtle Nesting Season!

Announce

City of Jacksonville Beach issued the following announcement.

The City of Jacksonville Beach, Planning and Development Department wishes to extend a sincere “THANK YOU” to all the citizens of Jacksonville Beach who dedicated their time and efforts by volunteering on the beaches sea turtle patrol during the 2020 sea turtle nesting season. Thanks to your hard work and the efforts of many local citizens who followed the recommendations of City staff by removing or replacing non- compliant lighting fixtures and bulbs, we are proud to announce that we did not have a single hatchling death occur as a result of lighting disorientation.

A special thanks also to the City Council and Administration for implementing the Sea Turtle Protection Ordinance, which on November 20, 2020, will make lighting compliance mandatory for all homes and businesses within 500’ of the Atlantic Ocean. Together we will continue to pursue the goal of a thriving sea turtle population along with making Jacksonville Beach a unique environmental destination.
