Fisher School mourns the loss of Irv Gleim

4

Warrington College issued the following announcement on July 22.

The Fisher School is saddened by the loss of Dr. Irvin N. Gleim.

Gleim was an innovative force in the field of accounting not only through his teaching and research, but also through his professional exploits as a self-made publisher. Dr. Gleim published training manuals for budding accountants that became the field’s authoritative learning tool for accounting students. Dr. Gleim, President of Gleim Publications, Inc., self-published his first CPA Review book in 1974, and has more than 200 titles to his credit providing accounting students the richest, most in-depth material for CPA, CIA, CMA and EA exam preparation.

Dr. Gleim arrived at the University of Florida in 1971 and spent the next 17 years shaping some of the nation’s brightest accounting minds. He was a treasured member of the faculty during the Fisher School’s formative years, and his uncanny knack to recite complex accounting equations without reference dazzled his students. With the Fisher School firmly entrenched as one of the nation’s emerging accounting schools, he retired in 1988 and became a Professor Emeritus. In 2013, the Fisher School dedicated the atrium of Gerson Hall to Gleim.

“Irv Gleim was ‘full speed ahead’ at all times,” said Dr. Gary McGill, Director of the Fisher School of Accounting. “He was devoted to the Fisher School and UF. He never rested in his quest to make good things happen for the Fisher School. He will be greatly missed, but his desire for quality lives on in everything we do.”

Gleim also made an extraordinary impact on the aviation industry. He published flight training books designed for pilots to pass their FAA exams and earn their certificates from Sport Pilot through Airline Transport Pilot. All told, millions of accountants and pilots used Dr. Gleim’s training manuals over his 40-year publishing career.

A celebration of life for Gleim will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 25 at Grace Methodist Church on Newberry Road in Gainesville, Fla.
