Bolles School issued the following announcement on July 26.
The Olympic swimming competition is underway in Tokyo and two swimmers have already added to Bolles Swimming’s historic medal count. Former Bolles Shark Caeleb Dressel added to his two gold medals won in 2016, leading off USA’s winning 4x100 free relay. In the same event, Santo Condorelli ’13 earned his first Olympic medal as a part of Italy’s silver medal team. Condorelli did not swim in the final but earned the medal as part of the relay in the prelims where he helped Italy to the fastest seed heading into the finals, breaking the Italian national record (which was then broken again in the finals).
Defending gold medalist and world record holder Ryan Murphy ’13 advanced to the final of the men’s 100 back, scheduled for July 26 at 9:59 p.m. ET. He is scheduled to swim heat 3 of the 200 back on July 28 at 6:26 a.m. with the semifinals starting at 10:04 p.m. and the finals on July 29 at 9:50 p.m.
Former Shark McKenna DeBever, representing Peru, won her heat and finished 24th overall in the opening heats of the women’s 200 IM.
Dressel is the busiest of the former Bolles swimmers at the 2020 Games. For his individual events, Dressel is scheduled to swim in the 100 free prelims (heat 9) on July 27 at 6:20 a.m. ET (semifinals 9:30 p.m./finals July 28, 10:37 p.m.), the 100 fly prelims (heat 8) on July 29 at 7:01 a.m. (semifinals 9:30 p.m./finals July 30, 9:30 p.m.) and the 50 free prelims (heat 10) on July 30 at 6:20 a.m. (semifinals 10:11 p.m./finals July 31, 9:30 p.m.).
Relay rosters aren’t officially set but Dressel is expected to also swim on the 4x200 free relay (heats July 27, 7:03 a.m./finals July 27, 11:26 p.m.), the mixed 4x100 medley relay (heats July 29, 7:17 a.m./finals July 30, 10:43 p.m.) and the men’s 4x100 medley relay (heats July 30, 8:01 a.m./finals July 31, 10:36 p.m.). Murphy may swim on the mixed and men’s 4x100 medley relays as well.
Condorelli and defending gold medalist Joseph Schooling ’14 will join world record holder Dressel in the 100 fly prelims on July 29. Schooling will swim in heat 5 (6:54 a.m.) and Condorelli will swim in heat 6 (6:56 a.m.). Condorelli also joins Dressel in the 50 free prelims on July 30 (heat 7/6:14 a.m.).
In another hotly contested swim event, First Coast News Anchor Lew Turner took on Bolles swimmers Will Heck ’23 and Harry Herrera ’22 at the close of FCN’s live morning broadcast on July 23 from Tarver Pool.
