Jacksonville University issued the following announcement on Sept. 21.
Jacksonville University women's golf closed out the Hoover Invitational with its best team score of the week to secure a fifth-place finish at Heatherwood Golf Club on Tuesday.
The Dolphins were led by Casey Powell, who finished seventh in her first collegiate event, and all four scoring players finished in the top 25.
Powell was able to ride the energy of the day after turning in her first under-par round of her short career to conclude play on Monday. She started with a birdie on her second hole, and after a tough third hole back, sank another birdie in a stretch of five holes of par or better. Through 13 holes, she was four-over for the day, but settled down to finish strong, shooting par or better on her last five holes, including a birdie on the last of the round to shoot a 75, for a 4-over 220 on the week and her first career top-10 finish.
Jenna Fonda hit four straight pars to start the round, before an up-and-down stretch for her next eight. She closed the day on a high-note, sinking consecutive birdies, part of five total she sank in the round, to finish 19th.
The two hardest-charging Dolphins were Frantiska Lunackova and Macarena Aguilera, who rose eight and 14 spots, respectively, on the final leaderboard. After shooting 2-over through her first four holes, Lunackova settled in to shoot her best golf of the week. Her next 13 holes were par or better, mixing in three birdies to go with a sequence where she sank par on seven straight holes. Her final round 1-over 73 was good to help her to a T20 finish.
Aguilera also shot a 1-over 73, her best round of the week, and finished T22. Her strongest golf was played in her last nine holes, where she made three birdies, and only shot one hole over par.
Mawgan Vater had a birdie to go with 10 pars, and individual Debra Ann Burdeshaw climbed three spots on the last day with her best round of the week, sinking two birdies along with 10 pars.
JU led the field in scoring on Par-3s, shooting 2-over on such holes, while also collecting the more pars for the week, with 167. Both Fonda and Powell were under-par on Par-3s, shooting 2-uner and 1-under, respectively. Burdeshaw shot 2-under on Par-5s, tied for the third best score in the field on the long ones, while Powell was 1-under for the week on such holes.
JU returns to the course next week for its first home event of the season, as the Dolphins host the Sea Best Jacksonville Classic, which returns for its 14th iteration, after a year hiatus due to the pandemic last fall. The event is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday at March Landing Country Club.
