Jacksonville University issued the following announcement on Oct. 7.
Jacksonville's women's soccer team (5-7-2, 0-1-0 ASUN) were unable to defeat ASUN opponent Liberty (9-4-1, 4-1-0 ASUN) at Southern Oak Stadium for its homecoming match. The contest marked the Dolphins first official conference loss and fifth consecutive loss overall.
The first 15 minutes of play were a back-and-forth affair, as the ball evenly made its way across the field. At the eight minute mark, the Flames took the first shot of the match that would fall right into the hands of Dolphins starting keeper, freshman Mariah Winebrenner. Two minutes later, Tinotenda Chiweshe rattled off the first shot for the Dolphins, but her attempt would ultimately be saved by the goalkeeper as well.
At the 29 minute mark, Liberty began to take full control on offense by dominantly keeping the ball on the Dolphins side of the field. Right before the half came to a close, the Flames' Lissi Gordon found the back of the net off a pass from Zoe Gaffney to put Liberty on the board first at the 39 minute mark. Liberty attempted one more shot before the halftime whistle blew and the Dolphins entered the locker room down by one goal.
JU returned to the field stronger than before. Olivia Abdallah and Selma Fohrer attempted back-to-back shots that would be saved by the Flames, to prevent the Dolphins from getting onto the board. A few minutes later, Maddy Oliver launched the ball past Winebrenner to extend Liberty's lead, 2-0. The next 20 minutes were quiet, as neither team managed to pursue a goal. During the 68th minute, Fohrer broke the silence with another shot attempt that missed the inside of the goal.
Through the last ten minutes of play, both teams pushed hard on offense. Liberty would try for one more goal, but it would lead to Winebrenner tallying another save. Before the final whistle sounded, Fohrer attempted two more shots, but would come up short in trying to put JU in a position to tie the contest.
Despite the loss, Winebrenner achieved a career-high of saves with four and participated in all 90 minutes of play.
Up next, the Dolphins travel to Georgia to compete against ASUN opponent Kennesaw. The match will take place Sunday, Oct. 10 with kickoff slated for 1:00 p.m. ET.
