Bolles School issued the following announcement on Oct. 7.
During a recent visit to the iLab on the Bolles Lower School Ponte Vedra Beach Campus, Anne Fallon’s third graders were challenged to think like space station scientists and agents. Librarian Christina Karvounis teamed with Fallon to lead the galactic lesson.
After watching a short video on life in the space station, students separated into small groups and were tasked with figuring out how to connect a ring festooned with four ropes to the top of an upside down bowl. The coupling represented how the space station connects to other objects in space. Students were asked to design a plan, discuss it and work as a team to execute it via two challenges. One of the big takeaways from the lesson was that it takes four communicating, planful teammates to pull on the ropes, hover the ring over the mounting and successfully “land” the ring around the base.
All the while, students learned new lessons in collaboration and how to develop strengths from their experiences to make more progress the next time.

The iLab, fully stocked with resources and creative spaces, has been open on campus for more than three years. It successfully provides opportunities for teachers at all grade levels to enhance their lessons and help students develop new skills in group engagement, project-based learning and engineering. Use of the lab is based on class curriculum as a means of taking students deeper into an area of study.
