Jacksonville University recently issued the following announcement.
Jacksonville University men's basketball could not overcome a cold shooting night at Williams Arena, falling 55-44 to Minnesota on Wednesday.
The Dolphins (2-2) held the Golden Gophers to its lowest point total of the season, but only Tommy Bruner entered double-figures for JU offensively.
The night started with two quick foul calls on both starting big men, Mike Marsh and Osayi Osifo, and JU had to use the bench for much of the first half. Rod Brown provided a spark on the glass and on offense, but Minnesota was able to do enough to gain early separation and maintain it.
After JU led 8-5 early, after Bryce Workman hit a short baseline jumper and Jordan Davis followed that up with a driving layup. Minnesota used a 10-0 run to take the lead for good. JU battled through much of the first half to keep the game within striking distance, and the Golden Gophers took a 30-20 lead into the break.
Minnesota scored the first seven points of the second half, before JU called a timeout. The Dolphins grabbed multiple offensive rebounds and Brown had a stick-back to get JU on the board in the second half.
JU managed a late rally, getting a layup from Osifo to cut the deficit to 10 and turning a defensive stop into a Gyasi Powell jumper on the other end to make it 43-35 with 7:55 left. That is as close as the Dolphins would get the rest of the way, as Minnesota hit a three to push the lead back to double-figures, and after Marsh hit a hook shot to get back within nine, the Golden Gophers got a three and a quick layup to go up 51-37, and salted the game away with their defense.
