Dolphin Smother Seahawks to Stay Unbeaten at Swisher

9

Jacksonville University issued the following announcement on Dec. 11.

Jacksonville University men's basketball used stifling defense and an efficient offensive effort to smother UNCW 77-48 on Saturday afternoon at Swisher Gymnasium.

The Dolphins (5-3) shot a season-high percentage and held an opponent under 50 points for the second time this season.

The game got off to a slow start, with both team's physical defense setting the tone early. JU led 9-7 when Jordan Davis turned a steal into a runout dunk on the other end with 12:02 to play in the first. After the teams traded free throws, Davis stuck back in his own miss to kick start the game-defining run. Over the next 5:28, the Dolphins went on a 19-0 run, featuring a pair of Kevion Nolan threes, an old-fashioned three-point play by Tyreese Davis on a back cut and a Jordan Davis layup to put JU up 33-10 with 3:01 left in the first.

The Dolphins led 35-14 at the break and came out ready to add to the advantage in the second. Jordan Davis was fouled on a rainbow jumper and added the free throw for three to push the lead to 22, 40-18 and after the team's traded threes, Mike Marsh went on a personal run.

He converted a hook shot in the lane to make it 50-25, sank two free throws and had a spin move and finish on the next possession for a 6-0 run to push the JU lead to 54-26 with 12:49 left. Then the Dolphins found their stroke from deep.

Tyreese Davis, Jordan Davis and George Pridgett hit threes on three consecutive possessions to push the lead to 34 and a few minutes later Nolan hit a deep three from the top of the key to make it 66-31, the 35-point margin the largest of the day. JU was able to play backups the rest of the way and close out the victory.
