Swarming Defense Keys Women’s Basketball to Win Against Bethune-Cookman

Ospreys Tie UNF Program Record for Blocks With 10, Ospreys Lead Wire-to-Wire

Thanks to a swarming defense and efficient offense in the paint, North Florida women's basketball (6-5) outlasted Bethune-Cookman (2-6) in a 60-47 win Sunday, Dec. 12 from the UNF Arena. The Ospreys led wire-to-wire and blocked 10 shots, tying the program record for blocks in a game.

The Ospreys generated 13 steals, scored 22 points off turnovers and forced the Wildcats into a staggering 28 turnovers. Of UNF's 60 points, 44 came in the paint, with Jazz Bond and Emma Broermann combining for 27.

UNF and B-CU combined for only six three-pointers, but the Ospreys converted nine more buckets inside the arc while holding the Wildcats to 31.5 percent shooting for the game.

Rhetta Moore worked an all-round day, registering 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and a career-best six steals. Bond reached double-digit points for the 10th time this year with a 15-point, nine rebound and four-block performance.

A total of 11 different Osprey saw time, with eight players getting in the scoring column. North Florida is now 5-0 at home.

Beyond the Box Score

  • First Quarter: All 16 of UNF's points were scored in the paint as North Florida led by the slimmest of margins after one … UNF went 8-for-16 from the floor.
  • Second Quarter: The Wildcats won the rebounding battle in the third, but North Florida got in the scoring column from three, including a momentum long ball from Moore as the half wound down.
  • Third Quarter: UNF and B-CU combined for eight field goals in a defensive struggle of a third frame … both teams scored 10 points and shared 6-0 runs … North Florida outscored Bethune-Cookman 10-4 in the paint.
  • Fourth Quarter: A critical six-point swing thanks to a Moore three-pointer and three Jazz Bond free throws off of two B-CU technical fouls put UNF's lead in double-digits … North Florida's lead ballooned to a game-high 15 points after Kaila Rougier made a layup with 6:26 left in the quarter, putting UNF ahead 52-37 … Bethune-Cookman went on a short spurt to cut the UNF lead to seven with 2:12 remaining … UNF's defense got stingy late to hold off B-CU.
