University of North Florida issued the following announcement on Dec. 13.
Guard Nets 15 PPG and 7-12 From Three Last Week
After lighting up the scoring column in two appearances off the bench last week, sophomore guard Jarius Hicklen was honored as the ASUN Men's Basketball Newcomer of the Week as announced by the league office Monday, Dec. 13.
In 26 minutes per contest, Hicklen averaged 15 points per game, went 7-for-12 from beyond the arc and sparked a key-late run in UNF's 91-84 win against Austin Peay Saturday, Dec. 11.
The 6-3 guard paced the Ospreys with 16 points in a road game at No. 20 Florida Wednesday, Dec. 8, hitting a trio of three-pointers while grabbing three boards in 27 minutes.
"Jarius Hicklen has continued to improve and develop daily as the non-conference season has progressed, showing why he had such high accolades coming into the season, " head coach Matthew Driscoll said. "Jarius has persevered and endured what many transfers encounter during the transitional stage, becoming a steady energy with scoring ability off the bench. Jarius will remain persistent in his approach in the classroom, on the floor, throughout video, and in the lockerroom, providing whatever is needed to be successful."
The Dallas, Texas, native came through with clutch back-to-back three-pointers that extended UNF's lead to 71-61 and forced Austin Peay to take a timeout with 7:31 remaining in the game last Saturday. He went on to finish with 14 points and three rebounds in the home victory.
It's the first ASUN weekly honor of Hicklen's UNF career, and the first such honor for an Osprey since Josh Berenbaum earned the award March 1 of last season.
Hicklen played previously at Oklahoma Baptist University, leading OBU in scoring last season before joining the Ospreys.
North Florida returns to the court Saturday, Dec. 18 against Trinity Baptist. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
