Correa Nets One in 80th Minute to Lift Men’s Soccer Over Wright State

Jacksonville Men's Soccer midfielder Olivier Correa scored in the 80th minute of Sunday's match against Wright State to lift the Dolphins to their first victory of the season.

Starting the game in a similar fashion to the Dolphins' season opener last Thursday, the rain was pouring down, and would cause problems for both teams in the opening half.

As players struggled to move the ball in such adverse conditions, it was Jacksonville who would command most of the first half, holding Wright State to no shots for the opening 30 minutes.

As the horn sounded out for halftime nothing separated the two sides and they looked to the second half for more favorable weather conditions. While the weather would improve for the start of the second, the game would eventually be halted for just under 45 minutes due to lightning in the Jacksonville area.

Upon resumption in the 66th minute, the 'Phins came back onto the field with a vengeance and were determined to score the go-ahead goal with time winding down.

With just ten minutes remaining to play the Dolphins did just that, as David Robinson lofted a ball from the right side of the box which was redirected off of the foot of Correa, the left post, and in.

The final ten minutes would ramp up in intensity as the Dolphins defended valiantly to protect their one goal lead, and after 90 minutes the scoreboard would read 1-0 in favor of JU.

Senior goalkeeper Eduardo Thome was a big reason in the Dolphins ability to hold their lead, making two saves in route to a clean sheet victory. The win marks Thome's second ever victory in net for the 'Phins and his second ever clean sheet as well.

Correa who notched the fourth game winning goal of his career moved his career goals total to nine, and the assist from David Robinson was his first point ever in a Dolphin uniform.

The Dolphins now prepare for a few days of practice before they host UC Riverside on Friday, September 2, at 7 pm. The game will take place at Southern Oak Stadium and will mark the final game of JU's three game homestand to start the season.
