Today, U.S. Congressman Aaron Bean announced the completion of rehabilitation work on the historic Amelia Island Lighthouse. The lighthouse had been nonfunctional for 18 months due to mechanical issues.

As a member of the Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, Congressman Bean advocated for prioritizing repairs with U.S. Coast Guard leadership. He played a key role in securing assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, District 7, Flotilla 14-1 to restore the beacon.

"Standing at 67 feet tall, the Amelia Island Lighthouse is a vital piece of Fernandina Beach’s maritime history," said Congressman Bean. "I was pleased to work with Bradley Bean, the Mayor of Fernandina Beach, and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary to make the repairs to this beacon possible."

Interim City Manager Jeremiah Glisson expressed gratitude: "We are grateful that the Amelia Island Lighthouse has been illuminated once again... Thank you to Congressman Bean for helping prioritize this project for our community."

The lighthouse was built in 1838 and is Florida's oldest operating lighthouse. It marks an important navigational point near Egans Creek and can be seen from 16 miles out at sea.

In 2001, ownership of the lighthouse tower and grounds was transferred to the City of Fernandina Beach by the U.S. Coast Guard, which still maintains responsibility for its light.
